Dear All

26/8
I’ve stayed here for 11 days already. I’m doing great. Don’t really have time to be quiet though. I’m sorry if I haven’t written to you guys as much as I supposed. Right now, I sit by the window in ARTScorpsLA. I couldn’t really see the street coz’ the trees are so tall. There’s usually an ice cream truck parks opposite to ARTScorpsLA. I haven’t heard its music today. Wondering where it goes. I love the music of ice cream truck so much. It purifies this Latino area, which contains lots of problems actually. My work in ARTScorpsLA is pretty cool. For the past few days, I was doing a mural with other volunteers. From 1~4 pm, we paint in a local school. I fixed the scale of the picture and color it. The picture is drafted by the children of that local school. It’s probably too large for them. That’s why the proportion is weird. Anyway, we’ve fixed it. Today, I did the shadow part. 3 hours are definitely not enough. I spent almost 30 mins to mix the colour! We work till 4:35. I didn’t want to stop…indeed…It’s almost impossible to mix the color again, even if I marked the color I used as well as their proportion.

Apart from doing mural, we also help beautify this area. We’ll paint the road, the park, the chair and the lamp on the street.

After coming back from the school, I usually stay with the kids. They are all lovely. Unfortunately, they don’t have chance to receive better education. They even never leave this street. A 9-year-old girl told me that she didn’t know her home phone no. coz’ she won’t need it, she will never leave here. The world is big, they should know.

I will start my project soon. What I’m going to do is bring the kids out. I’m now checking all the free day of the museum in L.A. They need to go out; they need art; they need the aura of museum. But money is a great problem. We don’t have enough cars. We don’t have money to rent a van. Even if we had cars, gas costs a lot. Meanwhile, it’s difficult for the parents to understand why it’s important for their children to go out. I’m glad that I’ve come. I, who come from another side of the world, may let them know how big the world is. Just one thing…I need to study all the information about grant application, so that I can finish all the paperwork later…boring!

Right now, I am staying in the park. Lots of Latino women are praying in front of Virgin Mary. Want to talk some more about my host mother. Linda is a Japanese American. She couldn’t speak in Japanese though. She lives alone but has lots of friends. She is such a wonderful lady. She works at UCLA...seems quite busy. Still, she has many hobbies and activities. She loves art, surf etc. I like to talk with her. She’s wise. By the way, she’s also a vegetarian. There’s no problem with my meal this time. Last night, we made pasta together. Can you believe that We spent 3 hours on it! But what I want to say is, the pasta turns out great. I guess I’m the lucky one. I’ve got a good host mother and a good organization.

I miss Stanley so much. For every min. I can think, I think of him. (A little girl just gave me a rose. You know I’m talking about you Stanley.) I remember what you said. In Love, I trust.

Hello Ally,
It sounds like you are already having an adventure. What a joy it will be for you to make such a contribution to the lives of the children you are working with. You are so right -- they need to know the world extends beyond their own neighborhood. That is such an important concept. That is one reason Sam and I have made sure Tyler and Travis have seen different people and places. We want them to understand that people can be different from them, but that just is interesting, not bad.
Linda is a lucky woman to get to have you in her home. What are the odds of two vegetarians getting together! I know you will have a wonderful time together.
We are having a lot of rain today because of the hurricane. Schools are closed as a precaution. Travis is glad to get to sleep in today!
Tyler got started in college. He loves it. Already he is running for president of his area (I think that means a group of dorms.). You know Tyler -- he said from the beginning to just give him a month and he will be running the place!
The Belmont students are back and the campus is full. We will be getting a new student from First Families sometime next month. None will compare with you though!
Take care,
Polly
Take care.
